One of the earliest serial production of cast copper axes was found in Vučedol and Slavonski Brod, Chalcolithic/Eneolithic Indo-European cultures belonging to Danube cultures dated on ca 3000 - 2200 BC, pannonian plane in present day Croatia (Courtesy of Archelogical Museum in Zagreb).

Not far away were found the earliest smelting facilities – the extraction of copper – in Ploče and Belovode, Neolithic Vinča culture dated on ca 5500 BC, in present day Serbia.
